@Ken669 - it was traditional in the 18th and 19th Century armies for musicians to have their uniforms in opposite colors. The Old Guard wears blue faced with red so the musicians wear red faced with blue. The Marine band is the same: Marine dress blues are blue with red piping so the band wears red coats with blue piping. This was done because the musicians were the commander's communications section and in the smoke of battle he had to be able to identify them quickly.

The Fife and Drum Corps are just one ceremonial component of the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment "The Old Guard" which was founded in 1775. The second one is the Caisson Platoon. It transports coffins on a horse-drawn gun carriage during military funerals held at Arlington National Cemetery. The last ceremonial unit is the Presidential Guns Salute Battery that uses cannons and fires 21-gun salutes during inaugurations, arrival ceremonies, and state funerals.

@freakybrit76 back then bass drums werent invented. the old guard is dressed as a colonial corps, but they play all kinds of music. the bass drum was in use during the civil war so it IS historically CORRECT. and bugels were used during the World wars in ceremonies.

@freakybrit76 I know what you mean!

I hate when people bring trumpets and bass drums into fife and drum bands. It is historically wrong. Also they did have drum majors but back then the drum major was just the lead drummer not a guy with a baton.

yeah, WWI did give a lot of guys nightmares - a result of mixing modern military technology with the fighting tactics of the previous generation. Ah well, we still have bands in ceremonies!

It would be nice if we still used bands in battle. But the cowards fear to fight anyone out in the open. And we also will just drop tons of bombs on them.
By: louislungbubble. on 07 Jan 10, 10:16:28
i believe they wore red tunics because the tradition of the period was for musicians to wear reverse colours of the rest of the regiment.....as irishmac said, for visibility..british regiments wore red coats with facings (cuffs and collars etc) of various distinguishing colours..the drummers always wore the reverse colours on their coats...marty
By: tevyethemad. on 23 Dec 09, 03:37:08
For instance the British drummers and fifers wore brightly colored uniforms, for many of the foot regiments they would have worn gold or yellow uniforms.
