WAGNER, AND FREDRICKSBURG. the union's commanders like always throw their troops into certain death. hell atleast the confederate generals fought a defensive campaign almost every time

No the South lost because they were on the wrong side of historic truth. In the end, if the truth prevails - and their ideas were wrong - slavery (working for no wages or pathetic wages while the few benefit at the expense of the many), feudalism (treating southern poor whites as second class trash serfs), free trade (opening up your market to everything, never developing the factories necc. for winning wars etc. being dom. by Britain)..kinda the ideas we've lived with since 1971 minus slavery.

Entertaining as a side performance maybe. Too many people are turning to style over sustance with the emergence of groups like "Top Secret." It just isn't traditional or "Ancient" if you will. Not bad just that in Civil War garb the performance doesn't fit IMHO.

They didnt run like cowards, it was simply two different life styles clashed, where southerners grew up on hunting and the land northerners thrived in the cities and factories. The thing that really did the south in wasnt the fact that they were cowards but that the North had more soldiers, and Grant used that to his advantage, he was able to throw 80,000 troops at a time at the southern lines take 20,000 casualties in the first 30 minutes and keep going, in the end it was a war of numbers.

@graidstin To clarify: Camp Chase Fifes and Drums performs as a Regimental fife and drum corps, that is, a COMBINED group comprised of musicians from companies of a Regiment (typically two musicians assigned per Company).

graidstin.yes i agree, the event was a spectacle for the public with all the pomp associated with it. but as you say a fife and a drum were all that was needed for troops as they are about to go into battle. the scottish regiments would have a lone piper which did the same job. lord lovats commandos. on d-day, were led by a lone piper, who survived d-day and the rest of ww2 armed with a set of bagpipes and a service revolver, which i dont think he even fired in anger. aye! the power of music.

graidstin. i was lucky enough to be at the edinburgh military tattoo a few years ago and there was an american high school band performing (cant remember the name) but, to start the performance, the lights dimmed and a confederate military band marched into the arena playing instrumants and music of the period. what a sight, what a sound. also rutgers university had sent their arms drill team over, brilliant! throwing rifles about with 12 inch bayonets attached. some show.

I read in Bruce Catton's 'A Stillness at Appomattox' that Sheridan insisted on having bands play during battles. McClellan infused a certain 'pomp' into the Army of the Potomac. An example was when Grant was first appointed supreme commander, he saw HQ's gaudy flag and wondered aloud "if Caesar was around camp somewhere."

As several companies were encamped Musicians did gather together. Camp duty was not played by a group this size and we don't do those in the large group seen here though we have recorded many examples on our four CCDs, (the newest just out last Summer) "Pomp" as you call it was likely provided by brass bands. "Pomp"- this is not. I'd be happy to be shown documented proof that company musicians did NOT gather to play.

The Coopermans are really nice, but really pricey. IMHO, tuning, heads, snares are more important than the shells as is evidenced by the care these guys have obviously given to tuning their drums to sound exactly the same.

1879 others claim, but yeah nice tune and a crowd pleaser. We play other tunes like those from the AVF which might well be post war. We also select tunes by composers who wrote during "the great unpleasantness" but which may not have been written during the war. But yes we are certainly aware of when our performance pieces were composed.

A highly trained musician such as yourself will take notice that the "Drums and Guns" portion of the medley is the DRUM SECTION SOLO. The Drum Section doesn't play f#s. Sole Leather however is shown here in my B&E as being in the key of D and beginning the the first full measure with a D. I wrote the response to the post at issue,not "guys in Camp Chase."
