Well my friend in my opinion you are partially right. Steve is a BEAST and a LEGEND so he would make anyone sound BETTER, but let's give credit where credit is due, and Mitch Mitchell certainly gets my respect! FANTASTIC drummer he was! What ya got to understand is that he's a session drummer man...and the most recorded drummer of all time at that. That's the hype...he can be flamboyant of course cause he's a badass but the reason there's a hype is because he can compliment the music effortlessly. I had always had a healthy appetite for drumming but 3-4 years ago the appetite turned into an obsession. (after looking in all the wrong places) I found Gadd. Gadd taught me something that all the others could never have - Fills may bring thrills, groove pays the bills! Keep digging into gadd, you'll soon understand what all the fuzz is about. took me about 3 years but I finally got it, and finally got a gig that paid me $100 dollars per hour - thank you STEVE GADD!!

@NostalhicProcrast: Many people, at first, see/hear Gadd and think "he's good, but why is he great?". As you learn, on your own, then in bands, you start to realise how hard it can be to get things just right, so that's both musically interesting and complimentory. Gadd can do this straight off, with anyone. He's not the most technically amazing drummer, I'd say Vinnie is the best technically, alongside Buddy, but he does things exactly right for the music. That's why he is so well respected.

@NostalgicProcrast Iwent to see James Taylor play live in Manchester England last year , first 3 tracks I could not see the drummer but his style and musicianship was obvious.I could only see his hands , the guitarits was in the way, I thought he played and sounded like what I had seen and heard of Steve Gadd.JT introduced his band , and it was the man himself. absolutely brilliant,driving songs and then subtley enhancing the soulful ones,an absolute master of his craft .

I've been trying to get into gadd for quite some time but i never see the big deal. He is really good.. I mean really really great, but i don't get the "best drummer ever"-hype he's got.. Check out the albums "Casino" and "Elegant Gypsy"...if you dont know Dimeola, you need to. he is a virtuoso(guitar) and only played with the best: gadd, lenny white, stanley clarke, chick corea. I mean the band Return to Forever might be the best combination of the most talented musicians ever. check out the album "Romantic warrior."

This is how a drum solo should be. Gadd is one out of very few people who understands that a drum solo is more than playing triplets or doubles or whatever as fast as you can. hey drummakid101, what he does there is just a ratamacue. he does the single and the drag on the snare, then finishes it the high tom, floor tom then bass. if you listen you can get it. it just take a looooootttt of practicing. once you get it down, it'll sound just like the master himself ^

Hey specialagentslowhand, turn your friends on to this kind of music. No computers necessary. I worked on amazing stuff at Elelctric Lady Studios between 1983 and 1990, but even then the writing was on the wall. Samplers, drum machines, midi,digital workstations and pitch correction all made their inroads at that time and are now are fixture in modern record production. There's still nothing like recording a room full of great musicians playing live in the same room. Pure heaven.

I was playing with the Eric Burdon band that night in Montreux, and I think that Gaddy used one of the two house kits (the other was a Ludwig kit) and cymbals which were provided by Zildjian and Paiste - they were on cymbal trees in the band room (under the stage). I think you're wrong - it is increadibly difficult. The difficulty is not in the sticking - millions of drummers could play 95% of the stuff Gadd plays... but it wouldn't sound like it does when he plays it. This is a great video. Wish Eric Gale was there with the guys. Steve was at his peak on drums I think by 1988. I love his ears and particularly his groove. He has gotten locked in to his "pet" Gadd licks now though. As great as he is ( he was my favorite drummer in the late 70's) It seems he has quit growing as a drummer, choosing to stick with his patented licks. Still though, one of the all time greats.

He also uses diecast hoops (as opposed to "normal" triple-flanged). They're meant to cut out overtones and deliver a more sensitive, focused sound. I like my snares to be ringy, though, and I find they just "choke" the sound out. I like triple flanged better ;)

Your comments are interesting. However, I don't think (just an opinion) it is because of race but because of the influence they have had. For example, one of the greatest Latin Jazz drummers in the world is from Lebanon (Robby Ameen). Why? because he grew up close to a Latin community and has been influenced by this music. On the other hand, there's no use in comparing a drummer to another one saying this one rocks and this other sucks. It depends on so many factors. Drumming is not a sport.

If a white person had grown up listening predominently to funk, gospel, R&B or whatever, they would be just as adept and proficient at picking up rhythm as anyone else who had that type of influence. I dont know why people compare artist who are a generation or two (or more) apart because the later comparison always has the upper hand (better or not) because he/she can draw from collective memory and recorded history such as any innovations in the field and in the field of drumming it's always changing and giving birth to new innovations. Oh no doubt at all. Gadd's musicality is far beyond most players who are masters in technique. To me, it may not appear as impressive, but it certainly something that deserves a great(er) honor. But on the other hand, his technique is not up to par with some other players (Rich, Colaiuta, Smith etc). And his clinic's nowadays are not too much fun; he gets tired very quickly! So we dont get to see all the awesome grooves, haha!

I think you're making a good observation here ... Yes, not one of his best videos. Even so, I've always appreciated how Gadd seems to fit into the music groove when backing up a group, whomever the group. It's like a different light bulb goes on. (Example: Al Jarreau with Gadd drumming.) Just reading the discussion here (obviously) confirms that he's worthy of discussion. And, his ongoing contribution to the music industry ... we're lucky to have so much video to enjoy!

Yea its disrepectful to both. But from a technical point of view, Rich could do a LOT more than Gadd could. Yes Gadd has great grooves but here all I see are slow flam taps and a few drags. Not much that impresses. I have seen better Gadd videos, dont worry. I know this isnt his best (at ALL), but I do think he is a little overrated at times. Now is the time where everyone downrates me!

I think what's interesting about this video is that it demonstrates the drum superiority of my cat, Ears. You see, Ears can play this song with one paw, while making banana chip cookies with his right claw and kissing his little girlfriend, Haw. When Ears plays the drums people fawn all over him as if here were some sort of demi-gawd. Now we all know S. Gadd is bad. But Ears is just, well, out of this universe. He's special and he knows it. What an amazing video! Brings back so many wonderful memories of Richard Tee, and Stuffy! Thank GOD this was chronicled and saved for many generations of piano players to learn from the master. I'm a big fan of Steve, but he dont play well bossa nova, samba, or other brazilian stuff. Nobody is perfect! I dont like his performance in this particular video, cause I know Milton Banana, Edison Machado and Wilson das Neves, masters of this style. He dont "hit the road"! Larry Goldings is a very good player, Steve Gadd too, but he dont know how to play brazilian music, he tries to do salsa, disco, starts soloing... nothing that he tries works good! So it becames very boring... he should meet Milton Banana.
