That's the easy way to do it. I always played it RLRL LRLR . Much more challenging and it develops BOTH hands, which is the point of rudiments. I don't agree with these "single sided" stickings unless you're playing Billy Cobham licks of-course! lol

Hey man nice job...a few pointers though would be not to lean to your left due to the traditional technique...instead bend from the elbow a little more and keep those shoulders square...next your left hand just isn't up to par with your right hand as far as sound quality goes...give more love to your left...overall sounds great and i hope you continue to improve.

heyhey buddy, sry 4 the late reply! but 2 answer ure question, i started developing my chops since freshmen year in hi skool. it took me a good 4-5 years of straight practicing (especially over the summer) 2 get where im @ rite now. n i still have lotz 2 go!!! but as a college student, itz super hard 2 find time 2 practice :( but yeaaa, jus practice good technique and i would recommend a private teacher. also, make shure ure hands r alwayz relaxed. thanx 4 watching! i think that if you master the single stroke roll, the second stroke roll, and the flam, the ohters rudiments are just those 3 adding something more, if you master those 3 you could master the others really easy, like TheLastPictureShow if u suck at double stroke roll then u wont be able to do a quick paradiddle

Thanks Tom. Also, to the question regarding what size sticks to use - that's totally up to the individual. It actually depends on several factors, like what you play (if in a band) and how big or small one's hands are. 90% of the time I use Pro-Mark 747 however my bag is filled with various sizes - even brushes and mallets. Sticks have various centers of Gravity. If possible go to a retail Music store and go thru a bunch of sticks till you find the ones that feel right to you. Good Luck! AD1

i use those sticks that you do and ie been drumming for about 6 years and i've never felt more comfortable with any other stick i just down to what is comfy for you John bonham used to use the thickest sticks he could find...which were alot bigger than what the guy in this video uses :) hope that helps :D and keep on rockin!

I practice ALL the rudiments EVERYDAY & I teach all my students to do the same. Like playing any sport, from Football to Golf, you've got to learn the basics. Then it takes dedication & Love for your instrument. Once the foundation is made there is Nothing any "learned" drummer is incapable of. Learning & applying the endless combinations is what separates the Greats from the wannabes. Then, of course, there are the Quitters. It depends on your coordination, really. If you are more naturally inclined to roll the sticks, then rolls will come faster to you, if it's easier for you lead with both hands, then you will learn those faster. It all depends, man. No single person's experience will decide how good you will be after a certain amount of practice. As long as you give it a good try every other day or so, you'll come along alright.

I guess I'm confused ... Three Camps, as it is, also basically alternates hands (RLR/RLR/RLRLRLR, etc.) & the paradiddle version I play uses the exact same accented hand pattern - no change. You can also use the same method with flam drags, using the same pattern. Thanks! MB

yeah using your left for ordinary things IS good. I try to remember to do things lefty. try to make it habit. also over the last two weeks i do this exercise where i hold my left arm down on my knee so i can only move from the wrist. then i make strikes forcefully making sure the stick goes straight up and straight down. i do this until i can feel the burn in my fore arm. i believe my left feels stronger since doing this a few times a day.

@digitaldown you can also improve your left hand when you are not at the drums ... just do ordinary activities with your left hand ... opening a jar , turning the knob on a door , inserting a key into a lock ... all the things you normally do with your right hand , try to do with your left hand

Just bought myself my first set, a PDP X7, yesterday, figured I knew every other rock instrument, it was time to master this one I do the doubles at 176 comfortably and the singles at 208 comfortably at first, I found the singles to be harder, but then I tried something new and found they were way easier than I thought for anyone who caresI start an RLRL pattern as 8th notes, then change the pattern to RLRRLRLL or RLRLRRLRLRLL easier way to apporach it methinks

buy a metronome as soon as posible, there is nothing worse in a band than a drummer out of tempo. And the worse thing is that the longer you keep practicing without metronome the longer it will take you to fix your tempo, you will create a bad habit, you will play and think your tempo is good but the rest of the band will start complaining.

Your teacher is right. It's easy to master single stroke stuff but mastering doubles enables you to mix things in limitless combination which makes you a better player. Example: a five stroke roll with doubles sounds different from the single stroke version. This gives the ability to play with more subtlety and expression. All good players can play singles and doubles well. Also, all rudiments should be practised hand-to-hand so the each can be played equally well starting with R or L hand.

The closing of the roll was slightly dramatic. And perhaps a more economical view of the entire hands would a better idea. None the less, a definite example. Please understand that the use of finger control begins at relative tempos. The back of the hand is generally a more comfortable area for slower tempos and lower strokes. And I DO NOT suggest pillow practice, as it completely eliminates rebound in the worst of ways. Try adding towels to your practice pad.

i dont like this wrist-wrist technique i find it really hard to speed up.Check out derrick pope double stroke , harder at the beggining but after u learn that wrist-fingers technique its easier to speed up and also is really good for paradiddles :)

You do it by holding just behind the fulcrum of the stick (just behind where it's balanced), don't hold it tightly, and then just do a normal stroke, but as opposed to lift your arm back up for another stroke, you leave your arm where it stopped at the bottom of the stroke motion and let the stick bounce. How much it bounces depends on the head of the drum you are hitting, how tightly you hold the stick, the weight of the stick, and how hard the stroke was.

in reality there are an infinite number of rudiments when you get into combining rudiments. i'll hesitate about saying that an orchestral roll is a rudiment. but a single stroke is. you have single stroke 5's 6's single stroke sixtuplets etc. you know. the vic firth web site has a section on rudiments that gives you exercises and audio. i recommend it for everyone.

I think you're mistaken. I'm not playing this on a set. I don't know any "rock patterns" I DON'T OWN A DRUM SET! I myself am mostly a keyboard percussion player (and a thumpin' good one, I might add) and it's been a long time since I've played snare as my old band director just let the percussionists choose what we play. I prefered playing keyboard percussion and I'm female so I wouldn't have gotten a choice anyway. *sigh* I just don't get it. that makes me sad because I'm very good otherwise...

Try 6/8 or 3/4. I work out of the book: Alan Dawson's Complete Drummer's Vocabulary. He notates it in 6/8. The thing is, I think this video is playing a different 'interpretation' of this rudiment. Dawson and Vic Firth website play it with the second drag on the AND of the second triplet. It sounds MUCH cooler at higher speed when you play the 2nd drag on the AND of second triplet. In other words, the first triplet is a dotted note, with the 2nd drag coming on the off beat.

The easiest way is to make them 16th notes probably. || 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a || That would be one measure of paradiddles. each number/letter/symbol repressents 1 16th note. each number/letter/symbol also repressents a right or a left stroke. Another suggestion is to start doing everything with your left hand to coordinate it. Like practice writing, eating, opening doors, turning on lights, etc with your left hand. It'll help your coordination. One our our best snare drummers did that and it helped.

That works for an eighth note meter (i.e. 6/8), but would not work for a triple subdivision of sixteenth notes or a quarter note meter. I'll explain. You suggest (1& - 2& - 3&) for 16th note triplets. Because a sextuplet figure is played within one beat (in 4/4), you shouldn't use the numbers 2, 3, or 4 until each respective beat presents itself. Rather you could say (1& - Trip& - Let&) for a duple feel, or (1 Trip Let - & Trip let) for a triple feel).

I know many other music professors that use 1 & a for triplets. It works fairly well when triplet subdivisions are the only rhythms on the page. However, mixing in duple or quadruple subdivisions presents a problem. Playing "1 & a" in quadruple subdivision (sixteenth notes) would imply 16th note/16th rest/16th note/16th note. I have found that "1 Trip Let, 2 Trip Let, etc " is the most effective way to teach triplet figures. It even works for sextuplet figures (1 & Trip & Let &).

That's actually not true. You have the right to play drums. The flag of the US army has drums on it. There are noise ordinances in any given city or town. You can only play until 9 or 10pm most places. My neighbors were super pissed and called the police on me. the police just said keep the doors and windows closed and don't play past the local ordinance and I'd be fine. One of my neighbors moved. Sorry man, but I'm not giving up drumming for someone with a noise sensitivity disorder.

haha i'm not denying that they're playable. it's just that those rudiments were created for a site called drumFUNNY. as in, the people who submitted them put them on there because they sound goofy. they aren't meant to be incorporated into licks or anything. i'm not denying that you COULD if you wanted to, it's just that they were created as jokes and probably shouldn't be treated as anything more

that doesnt make sense. right now the notes being played are accent tap tap tap mid-level accent mid-level accent. RlrrLL. the diddle on the left is accented slightly that is not because of the paradiddle-diddle accent pattern that is because of the natural tendency to crescendo up to the accent. all the taps should be the same though. 1.5 or 3 or 6 inches. i dont care which just stick with the same height.

dude vader pads suck balls i have one u know how many times ive thrown it at the wall cuz it sucks in #1 sound #2 feel#3 its the easiest pad to get pad hands on # 4 when i was having trouble cleaning my left hand flams i couldnt hear that i was to closed up, that all changed when i got my invader, i dont gotta throw it at the wall cuz i love the sound i love the feel and i love that ive never got pad hands again i recommend if ur truly serious about drumming then u should definatly get invader
