@marcdrumz all the way! i love playin deathmetal but guys like dave make anyone step it up and try harder. i learn alot from the guys in other genres and touchin my weak areas is the best to bring all my beats together, especially playin fast. another thing i notice is how people dont compensate their technique to match the sound output from the set. especially metal guys tryin to play on triggers. what happen to the love of the sound of you kit?

You idiots do realize that the purpose of this solo is to showcase the sound of the drum kit ...right? Hence, the reason why Mr. Weckl is basically staying to tom patterns that show off the sound of the drums. His job is to sell the kit, not play an amazing solo.

JoJo Meyer also plays amazing stuff but i think he hasent yet reached the level of weckl, gadd or colaiuta (or whatever his name is spelled xD ). I say theyd need just a bit time to expand their horizon and play drum&bass nearly as good as Meyer. But otherweise Meyer i think would need whole centries to catch up to weckl etc. My opinion.

PHX drums are out of this world! I owned the maple version kit for about a year now. Sound engineers freaks out about how clean, defined and fat they sound. Heard Weckl play them with Mike Stern a couple of months ago. Sounded absolutely sensational through the PA. On a different note, i see some people here refers to Dave having an "attitude" and not being a nice guy. I know him personally and he is a very good guy and a perfectionist when it comes to his work and craft.

hands down Weckl is the best, anyone who says otherwise is not a real musical drummer, they also probably think Neil Peart is the best drummer. Dave has the superiority over dynamics, groove, and tastefull fills. Technically he is superior if you know anything about the Moeller Method.

Loving Gadd's playing. Weckl has some nice tasty runs as well, but Vinnie seems to just try stuffing more and more notes into the space each run. Very cool, but I'd prefer just Gadd and Weckl trading for feel and groove.

I love all drummers, and metal drummers are great to listen to, but it isn't a listening award, its the Best Drummer, and to me that comes down to pure skill, technique, craft and musicianship, something all these guys are rich. I dont know, it just dissapoints me more than anything, that this level of skill is overlooked. But yes, i do love all style drumming and i respect that.

@progrockman85 That CANT be true. By his own admission, in an interview he said his swing wasn't as good as a lot of the drummers he encounters. Now - dont get me wrong, he's world class. But he cant be the best if he struggles with a style. To be the best drummer in the world, you'd have to be the best at doing everything that could be done on the instrument.

@DamesDolman My opinion is that to prefer one drummer over another don't requier the one drummer to have more skill than the other. Its a strange consept. One of my favorite drummers are thomas lang, but that doesn't mean hes the best. I believe that tiny details is what makes a drummer someones favorite. And most drummers won't be able to explain why their favorite drummer is their favorite.

Everything Weckl does is perfect! Even if he makes mistakes you can't tell. He never sounds rushed or laggy, just spot on and even in the most complex patterns. Truly unbelievable. He can both inspire and discourage at the same time. Goes to show what hard work combined with very natural talent can get you.

@mikshank123 while this is true (especially of bass) in a lot of pop music, i wouldnt say dave is really pushing the envelope or doing anything particularly risky with his busy drumming here. highly technical and prominently featured drums are common in lots of contemporary jazz and other genres too (death metal, like desolationofsmaug says below, IDM, breakcore, afrocuban music, even some experimental leaning hip hop)

Incredible technique but it's not authentic latin. Even his jazz playing seems to come from a rock perspective. That takes nothing from him as a talent... just an observation on his style. For something to compare this to search for: João Bosco - Incompatibilidade De Gênios. The differences are subtle but clear to someone who loves the irregular syncopation of a good latin drummer. Stylistically I prefer Keith Carlock's jazz.

My 5 faves would be, in no particular order: Dave Weckl, Steve Smith, Virgil Donati, Vinnie Colaiuta and Dennis Chambers. There are a handful of others as good, but I'd choose these 5 if I had to.

Joey Jordison blows him away! No really, one of if not thee best solo by Weckl, he's more relaxed now and not leading as much with his mind. You hear him playing more as opposed to seeing him thinking about all his licks a bar ahead. He practices so much, you can tell his live soloing is just insertions of all shit he goes over and over, the seams are there. I think he should do some acid, that would help him learn to integrate more originality to what he's playing.

jojo mayer is extremely good, but scoped/narrowed within how all drummers play.. no doubt he is exceptionally creative and has his own unique style, BUT is still do-able and learn-able... Iwould suggest drummers like thomas lang, johnny rabb, thomas haake (to name a few) to be technical driven drummers.. if you wanna play like these guys ive mentioned, i would suggest we drop our style of playing, and begin from zero.. my 2 cent

All I can say, that Dave Weckl is a beast player. Was on his concert yesterday, and I still just can't believe how good he played. He was with Mike Stirn's band, featuring Mike Stirn, Randy Brecker and Dave Weckl. The bassist was aswell awesome. They played this song on this video too :) Technically REALLY advanced stuff.

I totally agree. I look for this in sports too. I like people who move well. Weckl is very ellogant. Bruce Lee moved very well too. Their fluidity makes them enjoyable to watch, and it makes a difference! Apart from natural proprioceptif talent I do believe that Weckl never trys to play something which is at the physical limits of his technique which allows him to stay relaxed and fluid. He is a very double stroke oriented player which is physically less challenging than singles

Dave Weckl has a certain fluidity, finesse, if you will, in his playing. You dont really see or feel this in a lot of the other great drummers of today. Ive seen glimpses of it in JoJo Mayer and also in Steve Smith playing. This is just a comment on style not who is the best drummer. Just an observation

I really hate comparisons... everybody is different! Peart is great, don't sell him short... Weckl is a fucking beast, no doubt, I think the most technically proficient and precise drummers ever to walk the face of the planet... Ok look jazz is one of the most difficult and most coordinated style of playing, to do the stuff that they do, is amazing, i suggest to anyone that if they wanna play like these guys, go to your local music shop and pick up the art of bop drumming, I play out of that book and its hard, just pick it up and see how hard jazz really is, and as for the other guys, dave weckle would beat all of them, especially joey jordison
