yeah, WWI did give a lot of guys nightmares - a result of mixing modern military technology with the fighting tactics of the previous generation. Ah well, we still have bands in ceremonies!

It would be nice if we still used bands in battle. But the cowards fear to fight anyone out in the open. And we also will just drop tons of bombs on them.

i believe they wore red tunics because the tradition of the period was for musicians to wear reverse colours of the rest of the regiment.....as irishmac said, for visibility..british regiments wore red coats with facings (cuffs and collars etc) of various distinguishing colours..the drummers always wore the reverse colours on their coats...marty

For instance the British drummers and fifers wore brightly colored uniforms, for many of the foot regiments they would have worn gold or yellow uniforms.

What is the song?

Yes, most American units did wear Blue; however, musicians tended to wear red or a color that was easily seen by commanders in the field. The reason for this is because the fife and drum and bugle, much like the bagpipe carried by Scottish soldiers, were used for signals on the battlefield, a more important role then playing tunes for morale while encampment. Hope that helps.

By: ndluistro. on 07 Oct 09, 01:26:48
They wore blue (opposite color) so they didn't get shot by the British because they're musicians.
By: Ken669. on 06 Oct 09, 23:41:34
Didnt we use blue coats instead of red in the revolutionary war?

I was lucky enough to sit in on a live performance of the Fife and Drum Corps during the closing ceremony of my Presidential Classroom stay. This video really doesn't do justice to the power of the drums. It really was an amazing performance except it lasted for about 20 minutes.

The Old guard are fantastic!!! Just wondering, why does the Drum Major (?) (guy in front) salute with his left hand? It is usually the right.
